Local Opposition

Just read the papers today our NCMP Steve Chia kanna rebutted by two PAP ministers. The thing is it seemed like a case of rebutting for the sake of it.

Steve was commenting about our current budget deficit of 2+ billion should be a surplus of 19 billion instead as the government only book 33 percent of revenue of some one-off things like sales of state land etc.

Maybe my grasp of accounting is poor but I often read about company making profits or back in black because of such one-off gain, be it sale of asset or whatever.

So why should the government book only 33% of such transaction only?

And so he was remarking that given the surplus(even if only 50% are booked), we could do more in terms of subsidy, etc.

Out came two PAPs telling him off. Where to gain revenue if more subsidies are in place.

Well, this is contradicting. The government did just increase subsidy didn't it. And if what Steve said is true that we have more revenue, doesn't it make sense we have more subsidy?

But the crucial factor here is the % of revenue booked from such one-off transaction weren't addressed but smoked via meaningless rebutting.

Haiz. I really pity the local opposition. State fact also kanna scold, no say anything also kanna scold for lack of productivity.
